OUR METHODOLOGY

How We Test & Review Products

Transparent, evidence-based reviews you can actually trust — here's exactly how we do it.

At Body Science Review, every review starts with the same question: what does the research actually say? We don't accept free products in exchange for positive reviews, we don't inflate scores to drive affiliate revenue, and we don't recommend things we wouldn't use ourselves. Here's the full picture of how we evaluate products before putting our name on them.

Our Review Process

01

Literature Review

Before evaluating any product, we review the peer-reviewed evidence for the active ingredient(s). We use PubMed, Examine.com, and Cochrane reviews as primary sources. We note effect sizes, study quality (RCT vs. observational), population relevance, and whether findings replicate across independent studies.

If the evidence base is weak, we say so — even if the product sells well.

02

Label Analysis

We examine Supplement Facts panels for: clinically relevant doses (does the dosage match what studies used?), transparent ingredient disclosure (no proprietary blends hiding underdosed actives), third-party certifications (NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, USP Verified), and unnecessary fillers or allergens.

03

Value Analysis

We calculate cost-per-serving and compare it against competitors offering similar formulations. A premium price is justified by premium ingredients, certifications, or manufacturing standards — not branding. We flag products where you're paying for marketing, not science.

04

User Experience & Real-World Signals

For categories where subjective experience matters — sleep tools, cold plunge tubs, massage guns, protein powders — we synthesize long-form user reviews from verified purchase communities, documented user reports, and published third-party testing. We assess: ease of use, build quality, mixability, taste (for supplements), and reported real-world effectiveness over realistic trial periods.

We clearly note the basis for each evaluation — user community data, third-party lab results, or published testing — so you can calibrate your trust accordingly.

05

AI-Assisted Evidence Synthesis

After completing our literature review and product analysis, we use AI to cross-reference findings across multiple peer-reviewed sources, identify conflicting evidence, and surface limitations in the research. This synthesis step helps us flag where studies conflict, where the evidence base is thin, and where product claims outpace the science.

We do not claim human expert review. All conclusions are grounded in the peer-reviewed evidence documented in our literature review step, and we explicitly acknowledge uncertainty where it exists.

06

Final Scoring & Verdict

Our ratings reflect a composite of: evidence quality, ingredient transparency, clinical dosing, value for money, and real-world performance. We include a clear "best for" designation for every top pick so you can quickly identify if a product fits your specific context.

Our Testing Principles

🔬

Evidence First

We cite studies, not anecdotes. If a claim isn't backed by peer-reviewed research, we say so explicitly rather than hedging.

⚖️

Honest About Limitations

Most supplements have a narrow evidence base, mixed results, or only work for specific populations. We call this out — even when the product is worth buying for other reasons.

🚫

No Pay-to-Play

We have never accepted payment to change a review score or recommend a product. Our affiliate relationships are with retailers (Amazon, brand websites), not with manufacturers who could influence our verdicts.

🔄

Regularly Updated

Supplement research moves fast. We revisit and update our top picks as new studies emerge, formulas change, or better alternatives enter the market. Updated articles carry a "Last Updated" date.

How We Rate Products

Each product receives a composite score on a 0–10 scale, calculated by weighting five criteria. The score breakdown is included in every review so you can see exactly how a product performed in each area:

Criterion Weight What We Look For
Evidence Quality 30% RCT support, effect size, independent replication
Ingredient Transparency 25% No proprietary blends, clinical doses, no unnecessary fillers
Value 20% Cost per serving relative to ingredient quality
Real-World Performance 15% Noticeable effects over a realistic trial period
Third-Party Verification 10% NSF, Informed Sport, USP, or Labdoor certification

Our Relationship with Affiliate Links

This site earns revenue through affiliate partnerships — primarily Amazon Associates and direct brand affiliate programs. When you purchase through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

This does not influence our rankings or recommendations. A product that earns us $0 in commission can still be our top pick if it's the best option. A high-commission product will get a lower score if it doesn't deserve the top spot.

We are transparent about this relationship throughout the site. For full details, see our Affiliate Disclosure.

Our Authorship Model

Content on Body Science Review is produced using a structured research process drawing on peer-reviewed databases including PubMed, Examine.com, and Cochrane reviews. Our methodology — literature review, label analysis, value analysis, real-world signal synthesis, and evidence synthesis — follows the 6-step process described above.

We do not use fake human personas, fictional named reviewers, or fabricated staff credentials. All factual health claims are backed by peer-reviewed research. Our commitment to accuracy and evidence-based conclusions is foundational to this site's editorial standard.
